Healthy Habits at the fair

It's fair and festival season! You know what that means; funnel cakes, foot-long hotdogs, and even deep fried butter (yikes)! Although the fair is known for fried-monstrosities and massive portion sizes, there are no excuses when it comes to your health. You can still enjoy the fair-fueled fun while burning body fat and sustaining your healthy habits.

  1. Bring along a healthy snack. Packing a protein bar, fruit, or veggies is a good way to prevent your blood sugar levels from dropping and curb the cravings for undesirable food choices.

  2. Don't drink your calories! The fair is known for sugary slushies and fattening milkshakes. Consider low-sugar beverages such as water or unsweetened iced tea.

  3. Avoid fried foods! Rather than going all out on a bucket of fat-loaded fried chicken, many fairs offer healthier Mediterranean vendors with grilled options such as chicken kebabs or turkey legs (just remove the skin!)

  4. Go easy on the condiments. Ketchup, mayonnaise, and dressings are high in added sugar, calories, and fat. Low calorie condiments include mustard, relish, and salsa.

  5. Go to the fair earlier in the day. Our appetites tend to be lower earlier in the day, so it can be beneficial to attend the fair in the morning when you are less likely to be tempted by high-glycemic foods.
